750S

The most direct way to get to know the 750S is to take delivery at Olbia Airport: the car's check-in happens beside the terminal, and the first proper road is already the one to Palau, the granite of Capo d'Orso sliding past the windscreen. From there, the north of the island becomes a perfect proving ground: the climb towards Santa Teresa Gallura, the rises and dips of Capo Testa, the straights through the cork-oak groves where the V8 can finally stretch its legs.

The first thing that strikes you is the voice: the centre-exit exhaust, mounted high like a hypercar's, gives the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 a fuller, more present timbre than the 720S from which it derives. The second is the lightness — some thirty kilos shaved away, and you feel every one of them in the changes of direction: the 750S turns in with a speed that forces you to recalibrate your eyes, helped by a more direct steering rack.

The shorter final drive makes every gear angrier, the seven-speed dual-clutch fires its shifts without pause, and a dedicated button on the dashboard instantly recalls your favourite engine and chassis settings: dial them in once, on the right stretch of road, and they are waiting for you at every start. This is McLaren distilled — the car Woking's engineers have honed detail by detail.

The 750S is also offered as a Spider, with a retractable hardtop that takes nothing away from the rigidity of the carbon-fibre tub: performance virtually identical to the coupé, but with the centre-exit exhaust free to fill the cabin. On the coast roads of Gallura, at sunset, it is a hard argument to beat.
