The 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 has a full, rounded voice — an elegant murmur at low revs that hardens into something metallic and insistent beyond four thousand rpm. Its 353 hp takes the Panamera from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and on to 272 km/h where permitted; but the real star is the eight-speed PDK. In Normal mode the shifts simply vanish; in Sport they turn crisp and instantaneous, each upshift landing with a clean snap that punctuates every burst of acceleration.

What surprises most is how completely the Panamera disguises its size. The steering carries just the right weight and a sports car's precision, the suspension filters the imperfections of Sardinian main roads without ever isolating you from them, and through quick direction changes the body stays flat and composed. In the back, two proper armchairs: your passengers don't endure the journey, they savour it.

The flagship version available is the Turbo E-Hybrid, which pairs the twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor: top-tier power when the straight opens up, silent zero-emission running when you thread through the lanes of Alghero or roll up to the quay for boarding.
