The first surprise at Elmas is the geography: the centre of Cagliari is 8 km away — a quarter of an hour at the wheel — with the Poetto seafront just beyond. Heading west, the SS195 Sulcitana takes you to the Phoenician ruins of Nora in around half an hour and to the dunes of Chia in an hour, picking up the SP71 over Tuerredda along the way: quite possibly the first memorable corner of your holiday.

Heading east the script changes but the standard holds: Villasimius and the Capo Carbonara marine area are 57 km away, roughly 70 minutes, with a finale on the SP17 coast road that justifies the rental on its own; carry on, and the long sands of Costa Rei are 80 minutes from the airport.
