Costa Rei, where luxury means space

Costa Rei has no monuments and no piazzetta — and needs neither. What it has is a beach that seems never to end: kilometres of pale sand laced with quartz grains that crunch underfoot, and a horizon so open that in the morning you watch the sun rise straight out of the sea. It is a place built for summer — low villas among the oleanders, families who return year after year, evenings that end early because tomorrow starts on the beach again. Luxury, here, is quantity: of sea, of sand, of slow time.

Precisely because of that pared-back character, the car is everything in Costa Rei. The best coves are reachable only by road, often with a final stretch of white, dusty track; the good food shopping, the seafood restaurants and the day trips all start from the surrounding area; and behind the coast the SS125 Orientale Sarda climbs into hills of scrub and granite that deserve at least an afternoon. A luxury SUV — or a convertible with a proper boot — turns a beach holiday into a small journey, without taking anything away from the idleness.

How the car reaches your villa in Costa Rei

Your reference airport is Cagliari Elmas: 70 km, roughly an 80-minute drive. There are two ways in, and even that is a question of style: the inland route along the SS125, quicker and more free-flowing, or the coast road via Villasimius along the SP17 and SP18 — longer, but with the sea in your windscreen the whole way. You can collect the car at arrivals and pick your own route, or find it already parked outside your villa or residence: we deliver directly in Costa Rei, at the agreed time.

The handover is quick: documents, a check of the car together, a run-through of the controls, and the keys are yours. Requirements and conditions are provided at the quotation stage, so there are no surprises on the spot. Costa Rei is one of the 27 destinations we serve across Sardinia: if your trip continues north along the east coast, we can arrange drop-off in another resort or at an airport. From the Scoglio di Peppino to Cala Pira: what not to miss

Set off early, before the beach wakes up, and head for the Scoglio di Peppino: a whale of white granite beached on the shoreline between Costa Rei and Cala Sinzias, with shallow natural pools where the water at dawn is a mirror. Cala Sinzias, just to the north, alternates pale sand with a seabed that shelves gently — perfect for a whole morning. Heading south, Cala Pira is the most intimate of the three: a half-moon watched over by a Spanish tower on the dune, junipers reaching almost to the water, and a short final stretch of unpaved track that keeps the casual crowds away.

When you want a change of register, take the SP18 towards Villasimius: the road rises and falls along the coast with views that force you to pull over, especially at the lay-bys above Cala Pira. Or point inland on the SS125 Orientale Sarda, the historic road of the east: corners drawn through Mediterranean scrub and rock, traffic a rarity, and the scent of myrtle drifting in through the windows. It's a stretch that earns its place among the most beautiful driving roads in Sardinia — and you have it on your doorstep.

SUV or convertible for this coast?

If this is a family holiday, the answer is an SUV. A Land Rover Defender 110 treats the tracks to Cala Pira and the white-gravel beach car parks as if they were tarmac, with room for towels, cool boxes and parasols; a Porsche Cayenne adds a genuine driver's edge you can feel even on the SS125. Our guide to luxury SUVs in Sardinia explains how to choose the right size.

If instead there are two of you and the idea is to alternate beach and road, look at a high-performance travel companion: an Audi RS 6 Avant Performance swallows everything you need and turns the transfer from Cagliari into a pleasure, whichever route you choose. Our concierge can also suggest open-top alternatives from a fleet of more than 100 models — it comes down to how many kilometres of coastline you want to carry home as memories.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver the car directly in Costa Rei?
Yes, we deliver in Costa Rei: to your villa, your residence or an agreed meeting point along the coast. It's a door-to-door service — include the address in your enquiry and the car will be there at the agreed time. Alternatively, you can collect it at Cagliari Elmas airport and drive out here on the scenic route.
How far is Cagliari airport from Costa Rei?
70 km, roughly an 80-minute drive. You can take the inland route on the SS125, quicker and more free-flowing, or the coast road via Villasimius along the SP17 and SP18 — slower, but with sea views for most of the way.
Can the car be delivered to the villa I've rented?
Yes — villa delivery is the standard in Costa Rei, where almost everyone stays in houses and residences scattered between the beach and the hillside. All we need is the exact address and a time: we take care of the rest. Requirements and conditions are provided at the quotation stage.
Is Costa Rei worth visiting outside high season?
The resort is at its best from late May to September, when everything is open and the sea is warm. Off season many businesses close, but the beaches remain spectacular and all but deserted: for anyone after kilometres of sand to themselves and empty roads to drive, October is a quiet little secret.
Do I really need an SUV in Costa Rei, or will a sports car do?
It depends on the coves on your list. The main beaches are reached on tarmac and a sports car is perfectly fine; for Cala Pira and a few unpaved car parks, an SUV makes everything more relaxing, especially with luggage and family on board. Many clients square the circle with a sports car that has a nose-lift system, or a high-performance SUV.
