Start with the SS134: a few minutes out of town, right at the roadside, stands the Roccia dell'Elefante — a red trachyte boulder sculpted by the wind into an unmistakable elephant, trunk and all, with prehistoric domus de janas tombs cut into its flanks. An obligatory stop, a photograph, and on you go. The SS200 dell'Anglona, meanwhile, traces the coast: eastwards it leads to the mouth of the Coghinas river and the dunes of Valledoria, the sea flickering in and out of view between the reed beds; westwards it descends towards Sorso, the Gulf of Asinara filling your windscreen and the silhouette of the old town shrinking in your mirrors.

In the historic centre, climb to the Doria Castle at sunset: on clear days the terrace looks all the way to Corsica, and the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving tells the story of the baskets the town's women still weave on their doorsteps. The Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, perched sheer above the water, is worth the descent through the alleys. For a swim, Lu Bagnu is the local beach — sand and trachyte rocks five minutes from the centre, perfect for closing out the day before an aperitivo on the ramparts.
