Why rent a luxury car in Castelsardo, of all places?
You don't drive through Castelsardo — you sight it. The Doria stronghold appears from miles away, stacked on a trachyte promontory that drops straight into the Gulf of Asinara, its sand-coloured houses pressed tight around the castle and the cathedral's majolica-tiled bell tower hanging above the water. This is one of those corners of Sardinia where the road is part of the show: the coastal approach from the west frames the village perfectly, and covering those final kilometres in a serious car — roof open, sea on your left — turns simply arriving into a small ritual.
All around lies the Anglona: basalt country, stone-built villages and wheat fields that turn to gold in June. Distances here are short but dense — every detour leads to a beach, a wind-carved rock or a solitary Romanesque church. That is why so many guests make Castelsardo their base for northern Sardinia: within our fleet of more than 100 models and 150+ versions there is the right car both for a coastal escape for two and for a family trip that weaves between sea and hinterland.
How delivery in Castelsardo works
Your air gateway is Alghero Fertilia Airport, 60 km from the village — about 60 minutes of easy driving across the Nurra plain and into the Anglona. You can collect the car at the terminal the moment you land, or have it delivered in Castelsardo: outside your hotel, at your residence in Lu Bagnu or at the villa you have taken on the coast. Our WhatsApp concierge agrees the exact meeting point and time, so the car is waiting fuelled, sanitised and walked through in a matter of minutes.
Arriving by sea? We also serve the Marina di Castelsardo: the car waits on the quay beside your berth — a formula prized by guests cruising the Gulf of Asinara who want wheels ashore for a few days. One practical note: the lanes of the upper town are extremely narrow and largely pedestrianised, so we always agree the most convenient handover point at the foot of the historic centre. Requirements and conditions are provided at the quotation stage.
What to see — and drive — around Castelsardo
Start with the SS134: a few minutes out of town, right at the roadside, stands the Roccia dell'Elefante — a red trachyte boulder sculpted by the wind into an unmistakable elephant, trunk and all, with prehistoric domus de janas tombs cut into its flanks. An obligatory stop, a photograph, and on you go. The SS200 dell'Anglona, meanwhile, traces the coast: eastwards it leads to the mouth of the Coghinas river and the dunes of Valledoria, the sea flickering in and out of view between the reed beds; westwards it descends towards Sorso, the Gulf of Asinara filling your windscreen and the silhouette of the old town shrinking in your mirrors.
In the historic centre, climb to the Doria Castle at sunset: on clear days the terrace looks all the way to Corsica, and the Museum of Mediterranean Weaving tells the story of the baskets the town's women still weave on their doorsteps. The Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, perched sheer above the water, is worth the descent through the alleys. For a swim, Lu Bagnu is the local beach — sand and trachyte rocks five minutes from the centre, perfect for closing out the day before an aperitivo on the ramparts.
Which car for the old town and the Anglona coast
Here a convertible is almost the only honest choice: the coast road is one view after another, and the scent of Mediterranean scrub drifts straight into the cabin. A Maserati GranCabrio Trofeo has exactly the right stride — a full-voiced V6 and four genuine seats to bring everyone to dinner in the old town. If you would rather have something more compact and incisive for the Anglona's curves, the Porsche range holds the ideal sports car.
Travelling with family and luggage, or planning to reach the beaches towards the Coghinas estuary without a second thought? An elegant SUV such as the Range Rover Velar combines comfort, screen presence and everyday practicality. To find your bearings among the open-top options, our guide to the perfect convertibles for the Sardinian coast is a good place to start. Then one message to the WhatsApp concierge is all it takes: check availability and we handle the rest.
