The 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 has two natures. Below 3,800 rpm only two turbochargers are working: the Chiron is fluid, almost polite, and you could take it to dinner in Porto Rotondo without ruffling a hair. Then the other pair joins in and the world changes — 0–100 km/h in 2.5 seconds is merely the opening line of a surge that never seems to end, set to a sound somewhere between jet turbine and thunder.

The seven-speed dual-clutch shifts with a gentle violence, all-wheel drive renders all that potential surprisingly manageable, and carbon-ceramic brakes return confidence at every marker board. That is the contradiction that makes the Chiron unique: the most extreme car in our fleet is also one of the easiest to drive slowly.
