Cannigione began life in the nineteenth century as a village of fishermen and shipwrights, and that down-to-earth character still shows: the waterfront is alive all day, the boats come back in mid-afternoon, and the restaurants serve fish actually caught in the gulf rather than an imitation of it. The Gulf of Arzachena, deep and sheltered, keeps the sea calm even when the mistral is blowing offshore — which is why the water here so often looks like a turquoise lake.

Its location, meanwhile, is a quiet geographical masterstroke: Porto Cervo and Baja Sardinia are a quarter of an hour away, Palau sits at the end of the coastal road, and the La Maddalena archipelago fills the view every morning. Staying in Cannigione with a serious car means having the Costa Smeralda within easy reach without living on its stage — you come home each evening to a real town that smells of sea salt and freshly baked focaccia.

From Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport it is 33 kilometres, roughly 45 minutes: the road climbs the SS125 to Arzachena, then eases gently down to the gulf. You can collect the car at arrivals and drive straight to the sea, or have it brought to wherever you are staying — outside your hotel on the waterfront, at the gate of a villa above La Conia, at whatever point you give the WhatsApp concierge. Paperwork prepared, a walk-through of the car, and the keys are yours.

If you arrive by boat, the car will be waiting at the Marina di Cannigione, a few metres from the pontoon — one of our most frequent handovers, because the marina is the perfect base for alternating days at sea with days on the road. At the end of the rental we collect it from the same spot or from a different location, including the airport on departure day. The signature drive is the SP13, the coastal road that runs from Cannigione towards Palau right at the water's edge: soft curves, the gulf opening to your right onto the archipelago, Caprera seeming to draw closer with every bend. Drive it in the late afternoon, when the light turns golden — there are at least three spots worth pulling over for the view alone, and the urge to drop the roof always wins.

The best beaches are strung along that very road. La Conia is the closest to town, pale sand and shallow water, perfect in the morning; Spiaggia di Mannena, a few minutes further north, has a gently shelving seabed and a colour that hardly seems real. Between the two lie granite coves to stop at once the beach-club signs disappear and only the Mediterranean scrub remains.

Then there is the sea best admired from on board: day trips to the La Maddalena archipelago leave the Marina di Cannigione every morning, and the smart move is to leave the car at the marina, step aboard and come back at sunset with salt on your skin. To close the loop, take the SS125 Orientale Sarda south one evening: a few kilometres of curves through the granite and you are in Arzachena, among wineries and archaeological sites, before returning to the gulf for dinner.

The SP13 is a road for an open roof and a relaxed rhythm, not a stopwatch: a Maserati GranCabrio Trofeo does it full justice — four genuine seats, a V6 with an unmistakable voice and enough boot space for towels and beach bags.
